(compliments of NASCAR)
Dale Jr. has been running great this year with top 5 finishes and consistently 3rd in the points. It’s just a matter of time until he’s back in the winner’s circle. It looked like it would be Richmond last Saturday night, until Denny Hamlin had a tire go down, then sat on the track to bring out the caution. NASCAR penalized Hamlin, but it left Dale Jr. a sitting duck – leading the race and needing tires. Most of the field pitted for fresh tires. On the re-start Dale Jr. jumped ahead, Kyle Busch spun his tires, and the fans were in for some great racing. Dale Jr. kept his high-line, diamonding the track, and Busch went low and loose. What exciting side-by-side racing – until Busch used Dale Jr. to straighten out his car. Clint Bowyer ducked around them and won the race!
You could hear the bitter disappointment in their voices, but Dale Jr. and Tony Jr. put it down to racing and were already moving on to Darlington. The fans were furious, Kyle was flippant and Clint was jubilant! This is racing.
Kyle Busch has a lot of raw talent, that’s obvious. But if he keeps using that old adage “eight tires are better than four”, he might get the same speech that Ernie Irvin got all those years ago. NASCAR polices it’s own.
