2008 Nascar Rules

Starting the ‘08 season, Nascar has made remarkably few changes. Drivers outside the top 35 will now attempt to qualify together, under the same track conditions, instead of being spread throughout the day. However, Brian France has decided to have them all qualify at the end of the session, so expect to hear some grumbling. Usually this is the ideal time to qualify, so the cars outside the top 35 have a good chance to grab a higher qualifying position.

Nascar will now provide tires for testing at non-sanctioned Nascar tests, allowing Sprint Cup teams 200 tires.

No more letting the tires roll back, teams must now hand-roll them back to the pit wall. This is a good safety rule. Last year several tires rolled into other pits or out on pit road, resulting in accidents and penalties.

Pit crews will now be allowed to push-start their car just 3 pit stall lengths after a service stop.

And the best new rule of the year? Nascar will finally donate the fines collected to the Nascar foundation. I’ve never seen the point of fining teams, when they just collect the money at the end of the year. Since last year almost $1 million was collected, it is time these funds were put to charitable use!

What do you think of the new rules?
